How to Smell & Evaluate a Raw Material

Using scent strips, tracking dry-down, and building a structured olfactory memory.

Smelling a material and evaluating a material are different activities. The first is passive and lasts thirty seconds; the second is a structured observation that runs over twenty-four hours and leaves you with a written record. Perfumers are not born with better noses than everyone else — they have smelled the same materials repeatedly, in the same disciplined way, and can name what they are perceiving.

Setting up a session

The conditions matter more than beginners expect.

  • An odour-neutral room. No scented candles, no cleaning products used that morning, no lingering cooking. Ventilate beforehand, then let the air settle.
  • Wear nothing scented. No fragrance, and ideally unscented soap and laundry detergent on evaluation days. Your own sleeve will be a reference point later.
  • Same time of day. Sensitivity varies through the day and with hunger. Late morning, before lunch, works well for most people, and consistency matters more than the particular slot.
  • Not when congested. A cold, allergies, or a heavy meal will distort everything. Postpone rather than record unreliable notes.
  • Good light and a clear bench. You will be writing as much as smelling.

One myth worth retiring: sniffing coffee beans does not reset your nose. It is a pleasant ritual and it does very little. Fresh air, a few minutes away from the bench, or smelling your own skin or a wool sleeve is more effective.

Strips and dosing

Blotters — mouillettes — are the standard tool. Use proper perfumery strips rather than improvised card; the absorbency and the lack of odour in the paper both matter.

  1. Write the label before you dip. Material name, strength, and the time, on the wide end. Once four strips are on the bench, unlabelled ones are worthless.
  2. Dip to a consistent depth. Five to ten millimetres, the same every time. Dip depth is a dose — varying it invalidates comparisons.
  3. Blot the excess on the neck of the bottle or a clean tissue, so the strip is wetted rather than saturated.
  4. Hold the labelled end only, and stand the strips in a rack or clip them so the wet ends touch nothing — including each other.
  5. Waft rather than press. Move the strip past your nose in short passes with normal breaths. Deep, sustained inhaling fatigues you fast and does not reveal more.

Evaluate at 10% for most materials and 1% for the powerful ones — see the dilution guide for the standard strengths. Smell the neat material once, briefly, so you know what it is like, then do the real work at dilution. Two materials being compared must be at the same strength, on the same paper, dipped the same depth. Any variation there and you are measuring your technique, not the materials.

The dry-down protocol

Check at fixed intervals rather than whenever you remember. Set timers. The gaps between checkpoints are where the interesting information lives.

  • 0 – 30 seconds

    First impression. What family does it belong to, and is there anything harsh, solventy or screeching at the very start? Record your instinctive reaction before you start intellectualising it — that first phrase is often the most accurate thing you will write.

  • 2 – 5 minutes

    The material's real character emerges as the most volatile fraction clears. For most top-note materials this is the peak. Note diffusion here: does it project across the bench, or do you have to bring it close?

  • 30 minutes

    The heart. Facets that were hidden under the opening become audible. Many materials change character noticeably here — a floral turning green, a woody turning sweet.

  • 2 hours

    What survives. Top-note materials will be nearly gone; this checkpoint tells you whether the material contributes to structure or only to the opening.

  • 6 hours

    Base character. Musks, woods and fixatives are often at their most characteristic now, having been quiet for hours.

  • 24 hours

    Tenacity. Note whether anything remains at all, and what. Record the checkpoint at which you could no longer detect it — that figure is the material's substantivity, and it is one of the most practically useful things you can know about it.

Keep the strips somewhere they will not be disturbed and are not in a draught. A labelled folder or a strip book makes the 24-hour check easy and gives you an archive you can revisit.

What to write down

Use the same fields every time. Consistency is what makes a year of notes searchable and comparable — and these are the same fields you will find on every material page in the Veriscents library, so your own notes sit directly alongside the reference data.

Keep liking and describing separate. "I don't like it" is a real and useful reaction, but it is not a description, and materials you dislike alone are frequently the ones that make a formula work. Indole, costus and many sulfur materials are unpleasant on a strip and indispensable in a composition.

Building vocabulary

You cannot remember what you cannot name. Vocabulary is not decoration — it is the storage mechanism.

Work along four separate axes and you will find description gets much easier:

  • Family and facets. Start with the broad family — citrus, green, floral, fruity, spicy, woody, balsamic, animalic, musky, marine, aldehydic, gourmand — then push for the specific facets within it. "Woody" is a starting point; "dry, pencil-shaving, slightly dusty cedar" is a description you will still understand in six months.
  • Intensity. How much of it there is at a given dilution.
  • Diffusion versus tenacity. These are independent. Some materials project powerfully and vanish; others sit close to the strip for days. Both qualities are useful and they solve different problems.
  • Effect in a blend. The hardest to learn and the most valuable.

Anchor descriptors to physical references wherever you can — a real cedar plank, a cut grapefruit, wet stone, warm skin, old books. Abstract vocabulary drifts; sensory anchors do not. And where a material is the signature of a well-known fragrance, smelling that fragrance alongside it teaches you the material's effect at commercial dose better than any description.

Managing nose fatigue

Olfactory adaptation is fast, and it is the main constraint on how much you can learn per session.

  • Four to six materials per session when you are learning. Beyond that you are recording noise.
  • Sixty to ninety seconds between materials, and a real break every fifteen minutes — leave the room.
  • Do not chase a fading impression. If a strip has gone quiet after repeated sniffing, that is your nose adapting, not the material disappearing. Put it down and come back.
  • Reset with your own skin or a wool sleeve rather than coffee.
  • Record specific anosmias. Many people cannot smell certain musks at all — it is a common, well-documented, genetically determined blind spot, and it is not a failing. Write down what you cannot detect. It tells you which materials you will need a second opinion on for the rest of your working life.

Smelling in context

A strip tells you what a material is. It does not tell you what it does. Three exercises, in increasing order of usefulness:

Strip versus skin. Put the same dilution on a strip and on your forearm. Skin warmth accelerates evaporation and adds its own character; materials that are elegant on paper can turn sharp or sour on skin. If you are making something to be worn, you have to know this.

Add and subtract. Make a simple three- or four-material accord. Then make it again with your study material added at 1–5%. Smell them blind, side by side. This is the single fastest way to learn what a material contributes, and the answer is often not what the strip suggested — many materials that seem uninteresting alone turn out to add volume, radiance or smoothness that you notice only when you take them away.

Dose laddering. Build the same accord at three different levels of the study material — say 0.5%, 2% and 8%. Materials change character with dose, not just intensity. Indole is floral at trace levels and frankly faecal at 1%. Finding where a material turns is how you learn its working range.

Building olfactory memory

Repetition beats novelty. The instinct when you have a new shipment is to smell everything once; that produces almost no lasting memory.

  • Work a fixed set. Pick twenty materials and revisit them weekly for a month before adding more. Recall improves through spaced repetition — the second and third exposures are worth far more than the first.
  • Group by family. Smell six citrus materials together and the differences between them become obvious in a way they never are in isolation.
  • Test yourself blind. Have someone prepare three strips, two of one material and one of another, and identify the odd one out. It is humbling at first and it works.
  • Write before you look. Commit your description to paper before reading the supplier's. Then compare — the gap between the two is exactly what you are learning.
  • Keep the archive. Old strips in a labelled book, old trials in labelled vials. Smelling your notes from a year ago is the clearest measure of progress you will get.
